The Measurement Corner
"A welcome message"
We would like to welcome you to the presentation of a new vehicle of communication designed specifically to bring you some of the hottest and most critical issues regarding the measurement of radio-television signals, in a direct and very informative format.
This blog intends to become a channel of communication which is casual in its format and very professional in its content, designed to allow readers to comment, question or add additional points of view to those published by us. Although our objective is to familiarize ourselves with the most innovative novelties of our meters, we intend to do this in the most objective fashion, always trying to bring a real benefit to the installer in their day-to-day work.
But, why does Televes select a blog as a channel of communication? Why start with the field measurement sector? Why now?
Truth be told, this blog is only one of many different mechanisms that Televes is launching recently to bring its technological advancements closer to the final users. Not only the technology evolves, so do the tools to deliver them to the market. We could not think of a better to exchange our visions and thoughts with any user from anywhere in the world. The blog will be published in various languages and we will do the best we can to ensure that your queries, comments or suggestions are addressed.
We are starting with the signal measurement theme for a simple reason. Within the last ten years or so, the area within the sector that has evolved the most is the one regarding the field spectrum analysers. Far away are the days where we only needed to measure Level, C/N and V/A to certify an installation. The meters today allow for a much more profound analysis of our work, they are getting easier and easier to use and there has never been a better way to guarantee a signal distribution system than with the meters available in the market as of late. We consider that the worst expense incurred is having to do a job more than once and the field strength meters are our best friend in ensuring that the job gets done perfectly the first time.
On the other hand, the sector in inmersed in a radical technological change in the transmission of the TV signal. In just five years digital multiplexes have become almost the norm. COFDM transmissions are a total reality. There is even talk of evolving the DTT signal to a DTT-2 modulation in the future to allow for more flexibility for interactive services and HD content within the same multiplex bandwidth. Also, HD satellite content over DVB-S2 transponders are increasing their popularity.
It is well known that the digital signal brings us more quality, more flexibility, more options... but it also makes the installers work tougher as it is a far more sensitive to degradation within a distribution system. Hence, we need far more specialised field strength meters, more precise, more reliable and more user-friendly.
So, with this introduction we begin a new chapter of services to you. We launch this blog with the spirit of making readers enjoy the content... From this point forward, I will leave it to the measurement engineers at Televes to add value to our new “Measurement Corner”.
Until our next post...
