introduction

check if a lineal psu will be able to power a given number of modules/units is an easy job:

just sum the contribution of each module/unit to the whole consumption of the system.

then the result is compared with the maximum output current of the psu:

  • if that contribution is less or equal to the maximum output current, the psu can power the system
  • otherwise we know that the system cannot be powered by the psu because its consumption is higher than the maximum current the psu is able to deliver.

how many modules/units can be powered with the switched-mode power supply reference 5029?

this particular psu can deliver up to four different voltages:



and the way these voltages are obtained limits the use of the power delivered for 15 vdc:

(1): when voltages 24vdc and/or 18 vdc are being used, it is necessary to take the power consumption of these voltages away from 63w(15vdc).

this is so because 24v and 18v are generated from the 15v source making use of dc-to-dc converters.

therefore if part of this power is deviated to 24/18 v, it has to be deducted from the max. 63w generated for 15v.




let us illustrate this problem with some graphic examples:

  • both 24v and 18v have no consumption:

then the power available for 15 vdc is:

63 w - 0 w = 63 w



  • only 24v has consumption (e.g. its maximum: 13.2 w)

then the power available for 15 vdc is:

63 w - 13.2 w = 49.8 w



  • only 18v has consumption (e.g. its maximum 14.4w)
then the power available for 15 vdc is:

w - 14.4 w = 48.6 w



  • both 24v and 18v have their maximum consumption

then the power available for 15 vdc is:

63 w - 14.4 w - 13.2 w = 35.4 w


  • both 24v and 18v have some consumption, e.g. 10 w for 24 vdc and 6 w for 18 vdc.

then the power available for 15 vdc is:

63 w - 10 w - 6 w = 37 w
